Pi Gamma Mu, the International Honor Society in Social Sciences

The College of Social Sciences is re-activating the University of Hawaiʻi Alpha chapter of Pi Gamma Mu, the International Honor Society in Social Sciences. We need a group of 25-30 students to create a viable chapter. We are very excited by the volume of qualified students who have already expressed interest.


How will Pi Gamma Mu membership benefit you?

In addition to recognition for your outstanding scholarly achievement, a valuable item for your resume, member benefits include the opportunity to:

  • Apply for scholarships with Pi Gamma Mu.
    Each year, Pi Gamma Mu presents three scholarships for $2000 each and seven scholarships for $1000 each, for one year of graduate study. Any member of the society is eligible to apply as a graduating senior or as a prospective graduate student.
  • Publish in a peer-reviewed professional journal.
    Pi Gamma Mu's International Social Science Review contains the work of at least one student member in each issue, and publishers have asked and received permission to reprint student-written articles in other widely distributed publications.
  • Attend conventions - present your research.
    Pi Gamma Mu's 2017 Triennial International Convention is in Kansas City, MO November 2-4, 2017. The conference will include student paper presentations, leadership program, awards banquet gala, and a service project.
  • Receive job placement assistance.
    Pi Gamma Mu provides student and alumni members with exclusive member-only access to jobs, internships, and other opportunities including job shadows, informational interviews, webinars, networking connections, competitions and more.

What does membership cost?

There is a one-time, lifetime membership fee of $50. Parents are often willing to pay some or all of the fee when they see the benefits of membership. Students with demonstrated financial need who are unable to pay the fee may apply for a Dean's Award to offset the fee.

1) What is Pi Gamma Mu?

Pi Gamma Mu is the oldest and preeminent honor society in the social sciences. Its mission is to encourage and recognize superior scholarship in social science disciplines and to foster cooperation and social service among its members. Pi Gamma Mu serves the various social science disciplines which seek to understand and explain human behavior and social relationships as well as their related problems and issues.

2) What are the membership requirements of Pi Gamma Mu?

Individuals may be invited or may petition to join an active chapter of Pi Gamma Mu when they are a  junior, senior or graduate student in the upper 35 percent of the class, with at least 20 semester hours in social sciences and an average grade therein of "B" or better. 

Pi Gamma Mu's constitution defines the social sciences to include the disciplines of history, political science, sociology, anthropology, economics, international relations, criminal justice, social work, psychology, social philosophy, history of education, and human geography.

The UH chapter will include all disciplines within the College of Social Sciences: Anthropology • Communications/Journalism • Economics • Ethnic Studies • Geography • Political Science • Psychology • Public Administration • Public Policy Center/Matsunaga Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution • Sociology • Urban and Regional Planning • Women's Studies

3) How do I become a Pi Gamma Mu member?

Membership is simple! Please attend an informational meeting in Dean Hall room 5/6 at 12pm (noon) on either:

  • Friday, January 27, 2017
  • Monday, January 30, 2017

Application forms will be available. In order to complete your application, please bring a check for $50 made out to the University of Hawaii Foundation. If we do not receive 25 completed applications (with fees paid) by February 3, we will return the check to you.

If you are unable to attend either meeting:

  1. Print and carefully complete* the Pi Gamma Mu membership application form (pdf)
  2. Place application form and membership check ($50) in an envelope

4) When are membership applications due?

The absolute deadline to apply is Friday, February 3, 2017.

5) I am a senior and graduating this semester - am I still allowed to join?

Absolutely! You must be a junior or senior to be eligible. As a soon to graduate senior, this is a great time to join. Do NOT miss out on this opportunity. You may obtain a Pi Gamma Mu honor cord to wear at commencement and list the membership on your resume or job applications.

6) I am not currently on the island will that be a problem?

Your location is not an issue. You have been invited to join based on your outstanding academic standing. Participation in chapter meetings and events is an option, but is not required.

7) Is this different from my department's Honor Society? Is there a restriction for joining multiple societies?

This is an interdisciplinary honor society for students in social sciences. It can be in addition to departmental honor societies.
