Mānoa Academy Beijing - Summer 2018

Get an early start on your UH Mānoa experience by participating in Mānoa Academy Beijing, Summer 2018. You will engage with Mānoa faculty, build a new network of friends, and expand your understanding of China. Mānoa Academy Beijing is a study abroad opportunity that allow students to complete a General Education Core requirement (SOCS 180) in the exciting cultural and political center of China.


Where You Will Study and Explore

In Honolulu

Orientation for the Mānoa Academy Beijing begins on the majestic Mānoa campus. Students have the options of residing in residence halls or homestay.

  • You will receive boot-camp training in conversational Mandarin and begin your course of study.
  • In the afternoons, you will also gain fresh perspectives on China's ties with Hawaiʻi, through special tours to historic and cultural sites.

In Beijing

The Chinese host institution, Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) is located in the heart of Beijing in the modern university district of Haidian. From the historic Summer Palace to the modern IT offices of Baidu Campus and Google – Beijing, Haidian is a hip tech and university district.

  • Mornings will introduce you to China within the context of a rapidly changing world. Topics will relate to issues like health and aging, resilience and sustainability, social systems for health and community, among other current issues. You will learn about major political, social, economic, cultural, and historic dimensions of globalization.
  • In the afternoons, join your classmates for excursions to cultural and historical landmarks, including the Great Wall, the Summer Palace, and Tiananmen Square, among other exciting treasured places. Deepen your appreciation for Chinese culture through special options like calligraphy and taiji (Tai Chi).

Accommodations and Meals

You live in comfortable double rooms with other UHM students in a hotel blocks from the BFSU campus. Room amenities include private bathrooms, air conditioning, TV, and cleaning service. Internet access available via Ethernet cable.

All meals are covered, free of charge. Students are provided with on-campus meal cards. For breakfast and lunch, the BFSU cafeterias offer a wide array of reasonably-priced Chinese and foreign food. Dinners are included with daily excursion tours.


Coursework and Certificate

Academic classes delve into global issues involving China's culture, society, economics, and language. Authentic experiences with fellow students will take you behind the scenes of a modern city that is thriving and yet is grounded in antiquity.

  1. SOCS 180 Introduction to International and Global Studies (3) Introduces undergraduate students to the major political, social, economic, cultural, technological, and historical dimensions of globalization. Special attention will be paid to globalization process that has impacted Hawaiʻi and the Asia-Pacific region. A-F only. (Cross-listed as POLS 160) FGB
  2. BFSU Certificate of Completion, a distinguished recognition from the preeminent foreign language university in China

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Do I need a passport?

Yes, all students are required to have a valid original signed U.S. passport. Please allow ample time to apply for a passport. Passport processing averages 6-8 weeks. A first-time adult passport is estimated to cost $135. Passports must have at least 6 months of remaining validity and blank visa pages.

2. Do I need a visa?

Yes, all students are required to have a valid visa. You must have a valid U.S. passport in order to start the visa application process. Visa processing takes on average 3-4 weeks and the cost is an estimated $180.

3. What is the activity level in Beijing?

Tours and excursions in Beijing are physically active. Most days are moderately to strenuously paced with walking, including hilly terrain and stairs. Please bring comfortable shoes and attire.

How to Apply

Mānoa Academy Beijing is designed for incoming UH Mānoa first year students, although current UH Mānoa students are eligible to apply. Preference is given to students who have participated in the Mānoa Academy. The program will be capped at 20 students, so please apply early for best consideration!

Cost

UHM Summer tuition and fees apply, as well as visa and passport costs. Scholarships may be available. All in-country costs including accommodations, meals, ground transportation, excursions, and other program costs are covered by a generous grant from the Hanban, Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU), and UH Mānoa College of Social Sciences, valued at over $2,600 per student. Round-trip airfare to Beijing is generously provided with support from Hawaiian Airlines.
